Umbra is another word for a shaded area, sometimes in reference to a celestial body. I think of this sculpture as an undefined organic form that suggests a terrestrial plant or a creature of the ocean. The intense glossy black glaze on the interior creates a mysterious void, offering further ambiguity of form. The void is a recurring theme in much of my artwork, referring to the unknown origins of the universe or to the mysterious depths of the sea.
